There’s a new bench at Billingham Beck Valley Country Park, placed in memory of Russ Devereux.
Russ is the reason the Headlight Project exists. Our charity was founded in his memory, and everything we do, from supporting families bereaved by suicide to delivering suicide prevention education across Teesside, carries his name forward. So it means so much to see his name somewhere people will stop, rest and maybe think of the people they love.
The bench was made possible by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Councillors Marcus Vickers and David Reynard, who chose the spot and organised its installation. In September, our CEO Anne Cullum met Marcus and David at the park to see the bench for the first time, alongside photographer Dawn McNamara, who captured these beautiful photos.
It really is a lovely place to take a moment. Marcus shared a few words about why the park felt right:
“Following the park’s major biodiversity and wetland restoration, the area has truly been revitalised into a peaceful haven, making it the perfect setting for rest, quiet reflection, and mental well-being.
This bench serves as a deeply meaningful way to remember Russ Devereux and honour his legacy. By offering a serene sanctuary where people can sit and pause.
We want to ensure that no one in our community ever feels they have to face a dark time or navigate grief in isolation. Whether residents are finding comfort here in the beauty of nature, or spotting his family firm’s, there is a guiding light when the road ahead is dark.”
A huge thank you to Marcus and David for their kindness and support, to everyone involved in the installation, and to Dawn for her wonderful photography.
If you’re passing through the park, take a seat and say hello to Russ for us.
